What is the Real Meaning of Success as an Inventor?

By Donteacia Seymore on 8/25/2024

You know, I've been thinking a lot about what it means to be successful as an inventor.

And I gotta tell you, it's not what most people think.

Society loves to paint this picture of success that looks like fame, fortune, and your big break on Shark Tank.

But let me let you in on a little secret - that's not the whole story. Not even close.

The real meaning of success as an inventor? It's about the fire in your belly that keeps you up at night, sketching out ideas on napkins. It's about the way your eyes light up when you talk about your latest prototype.

It's about the quiet satisfaction (and excitement) you feel when you solve a problem that's been bugging you for weeks.

Success isn't a destination. It's the journey of bringing your ideas to life; of learning and growing with every setback and triumph.

It's about staying true to your vision, even when you have to change course for the moment.

Let’s take a closer look - and really talk about it.

First of All

Don’t let someone else’s definition of success pressure or limit you. Their path isn’t yours to walk. Maybe for them, success is all about the bottom line.

But for you?

Maybe it’s about creating something that makes people's lives easier or solving a problem no one else has tackled yet.

Maybe it's about creating a body of patented work that your heirs can profit from.

Whatever it is, don't let someone else decide for you.

Here’s Why

When you choose to follow your dream of being an inventor, you also get to choose your definition of success. Embrace that freedom!

Maybe success for you is the thrill of seeing your product on a store shelf.

Or maybe it's the satisfaction of knowing you've made a positive impact on the world, no matter how small.

Whatever your motivation and desired outcome, you decide what success means for you.

Resist the Fear

I know it can be scary sometimes. Fear has a sneaky way of creeping in and whispering that your dreams are too big, that you're reaching for the impossible.

But here's the thing - fear is a liar. It's trying to trick you into playing small, into settling for less than you're capable of.

The world needs your unique perspective and your innovative ideas. Don't let fear rob us of the amazing inventions only you can create.

Stay the Course

Now, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it - this journey isn't always easy. The process of building an invention? That's the easy part.

Staying the course when things get tough? That's where the real challenge lies.

But you know what? That's also where the real growth happens. Those moments of doubt, frustration, wanting to throw in the towel - that's where you discover what you're made of.

So buckle up, my friend. This ride will get bumpy, but I promise it's worth it.

Every setback is a setup for a comeback. Every failure is a lesson that'll make your next attempt even stronger.

Here are some actionable steps to help you shift your mindset and stay the course:

1. Define Your Own Success: Take a moment to write down what success looks like for you. Is it about financial gain, personal fulfillment,

or making a difference? Keep this definition close to remind yourself of your true goals.

2. Create a Vision Board: Visualize your dreams! Gather images,

quotes, and anything that inspires you and create a vision board.

Place it somewhere you'll see it every day to keep your motivation high.

3. Practice Gratitude: Each day, write down three things you’re grateful for in your invention journey. This practice shifts your focus from challenges to the positive aspects of your progress.

4. Embrace Failure as Feedback: When setbacks occur, reframe

your thinking. Instead of viewing them as failures, see them as valuable feedback that guides you toward improvement.

5. Surround Yourself with Support: Connect with fellow inventors or join a community that shares your passions. Sharing your journey with others can provide encouragement and inspiration when you need it most.

6. Set Small, Achievable Goals: Break your larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks. Celebrate each small win to build momentum and keep your spirits high.

7. Schedule Regular Reflection Time: Reflect on your journey each week. What have you learned? What can you improve? This practice helps you stay aware of your growth and keeps you aligned with your goals.

Pricing your product is about more than numbers—it’s about defining its value and setting the stage for your success.

While this step is critical, don’t let it overwhelm you.

With clarity, research, and a willingness to adjust as you go, you’ll find the sweet spot that resonates with your customers and meets your goals.

Every decision you make is moving your idea closer to reality. I’m excited to see where this journey takes you!
